I don’t do too much volunteer work. Not nearly as much as I should, I guess. But I do my own things, for free. Stuff related to computers. I don’t see anybody else doing these things and yet when I offer them for free, some people are nice enough to actually want to pay me for them.
Computer Purchasing Advice/Assistance: I’ll give you an hour of my time to help you purchase a PC of your choice. Sometimes it’s just nice to have a professional explain things to you and answer all those questions you might have. My reasoning is that maybe you’ll think of me when you want it set-up, or serviced.
Build A PC in Class: I’ll go to any school in the area and do a demonstration on how to build a PC. This is great for kids and it helps take away the mystique of the PC as a “magic” box. I bring all the equipment, and lots of touchable spare parts. Education is a good thing. Heck, drop your kid off on a Saturday and we’ll do it at the shop. (Minimum two kids, maximum five). Takes about an hour.
Old Equipment Disposal: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I will dispose of your old equipment the right way. Usable parts are put into the Computers for Students program. We don’t accept everything, but quite a bit.
Computers for Students: Not everybody can afford a PC and old PC’s can be made usable with some additional spare parts. I can often combine two old PCs and make one very usable one. These go to families who can’t afford a PC for their child. My reasoning is that why should a child be penalized ? You would toss the equipment anyway.
Tech Support: You have a simple question...or maybe a complex one. Or, you just need to step through something quick. I may not be available at midnight, but you’ll get an answer in English, with no accent...and I won’t address you as sir or ma’am. My reasoning is that making computing easier for you is part of my job. Lots of people call for all sorts of questions, from the mundane to the complex. I’d rather hear from you than not !
Guides, Tips, Newsletters, Advice: I create and give away these items to give clients a better understanding of computers and the computing experience. They’re free. As I see it, educating clients is part of my job, and it does make my job easier. |
